Dr. Shimon Friedman received his D.M.D. degree in 1975 and Certificate in Endodontics in 1983 from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he taught for 17 years. He is board-certified in endodontics in Israel and served as Chairman of the Israel Endodontic Society from 1985 to 1988.
In 1992, Dr. Friedman was appointed Head of Endodontics at the University of Toronto, a position he held for 20 years, and in 1993 established Canada’s first graduate endodontics program, where he served as program director for 22 years until stepping down in 2015. Under his leadership, the M.S.c. Endodontics Program at the University of Toronto has gained international recognition for its excellence.
Dr. Friedman has published 149 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, 14 textbook chapters and many research abstracts and has presented over 330 national and international lectures, as well as served on the editorial boards of major endodontic journals.
Dr. Friedman is an award-winning clinician, researcher and educator. His awards include a 2003 Medal of Merit from the City of Paris, 2006 L. I. Grossman Award from the French Endodontic Society, 2008 Louis I. Grossman Award from the American Association of Endodontists for “cumulative publication of significant research studies that have made an extraordinary contribution to endodontology,” 2013 W.W. Wood Award from the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry for excellence in dental education, 2014 Award of Distinction from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, 2018 I. B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists for “demonstrated excellence through selfless commitment to full-time educational pursuits and … instilling in students the desire to pursue excellence in their careers” and 2019 Life Membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Fraternity Tau Tau Chapter.
